The Westchester County District Attorney's Office (WCDAO) has opportunities for attorneys to join our 2025 Fall Class.
In September of each year, new Assistant District Attorneys participate in an enhanced training program with the goal of welcoming our ADAs and begin the training that will prepare them to be skilled prosecutors and experienced litigators, and succeed in our office.
To support our goals, our new ADAs will attend approximately six weeks of initial training which will include presentations from guest speakers representing each of the divisions and specialized units in our office on and interactive skills workshops on topics including: (1) an orientation familiarizing them with the work and structure of our office; (2) an overview of how cases begin, and progress through the office and court system ; (3) local criminal court practice, drafting accusatory instruments, plea parameters, sentencings, hearings, trial techniques, and ethical obligations; and (4) New York Criminal Procedure law, New York Penal law, search and seizure law, and suppression issues. In addition, the training program includes an opportunity to shadow colleagues in the local criminal courts throughout the training period to allow for hands on experience and practical application of the concepts and skills discussed during lectures.
After the initial six week training program, new ADA will be assigned to one of our seven branch offices where, under the supervision of a Branch Chief, they will inherit their own case load, draft motion responses, participate in court proceedings, and conduct hearings and trials.
Additionally, and recognizing a need to acclimate and train lateral hires from other DA's offices, we also established a week-long onboarding and training program for ADAs with prior experience. This program focuses on the introduction to the structure and practices of the WCDAO by meeting with key personnel on ethics, data systems, discovery, and other specialized training necessary for work as a prosecutor in Westchester County.
Assistant District Attorneys must make a three-year commitment and serve at the pleasure of the District Attorney.
In light of the diversity in Westchester County, the office seeks to have a legal staff that reflects the diversity of the community that we serve. To that end, we actively recruit minority applicants. The WCDAO is firmly committed to a policy against discrimination based on race, color, religion, gender, national or ethnic origin, age, disability, marital or veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or employment status.
New York State Public Officers Law Section 3(1) requires that all persons holding civil office be citizens of the United States. Accordingly, United States citizenship is required of all Assistant District Attorneys upon commencement of their employment, as is New York State residency.
