Description

The Westchester County District Attorney’s Office seeks an experienced criminal prosecutor to serve as an Assistant District Attorney handling investigations and felony prosecutions in their Trials & Investigations Division’s Hate Crimes Unit. Assistant District Attorneys in the Hate Crimes Unit work closely with Westchester’s almost fifty law enforcement agencies in the investigation and prosecution of hate crimes and bias incident matters. Applicants should have a familiarity with hate crimes prosecutions, extensive experience presenting a variety of cases to the Grand Jury, felony jury trial experience, proactive investigative skills, and a willingness to present and educate law enforcement and the community in both formal and informal settings. Candidates should possess extensive writing experience, excellent presentation and organizational skills, and the ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information.

All Assistants are regularly provided with continuing legal education through the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Managing a caseload of felony and, at times, misdemeanor matters while adhering to strict statutory deadlines;
  • Presentation of cases to the Grand Jury and prosecution of felony trials in Superior Court with all attendant responsibilities including, but not limited to, discovery, certification of case readiness, witness preparation, motion practice, and all courtroom litigation;
  • Proactive investigation of pre-arrest criminal matters in addition to post-arrest analysis, research, and review and continued investigation of charged cases;
  • Drafting a variety of applications for court authorization that include, inter alia, a variety of search warrants ranging from physical locations to electronic devices and social media platforms;
  • Regular collaboration and conferencing with local, State, and federal law enforcement partners;
  • Appearance in Superior Court, both in person and virtually, to handle any/all court proceedings;
  • Participation in on-call/after-hours duty;
  • Regular collaboration with community partners regarding hate crime and bias incidents issues arising throughout or threatening Westchester;
  • Training and educating law enforcement agencies on hate crime laws, and the investigation and prosecution of hate crime cases;
  • Representing the Office and presenting on behalf of the Office at, local, state, and national conferences on the subject of hate crimes;
  • Educating the community on the subject of hate crimes and bias incidents to increase reporting of both;
  • Liaising and reporting to grant agencies from whom the Unit receives funding for activities, personnel, and other work;
  • Exercise good judgment and strong ethics.
