Description

The Westchester County District Attorney's Office (WCDAO) has opportunities for attorneys to join our team now!

We are seeking Assistant District Attorneys with 0–3 years of experience to join our enhanced training program. This initiative is designed to welcome new ADAs and provide comprehensive instruction that will prepare them to become skilled prosecutors, experienced litigators, and successful members of our office.

The Office of the Westchester County District Attorney is committed to pursuing justice with integrity, fairness, and accountability. The Office is currently accepting applications for the position of entry-level Assistant District Attorney (with up to four years of experience) who share in that goal.

Newly hired Assistant District Attorneys will be assigned to the Motions and Training Bureau and participate in a training program, consisting of lectures on criminal law and procedure and ethics; time spent in local criminal courts; and mock trial exercises. Simultaneously, as an Assistant District Attorney within the Motions and Training Bureau, the Assistant will be responsible for preparing responses to pretrial motions filed by defendants in post-indictment matters and have opportunities to shadow and second seat seasoned trial attorneys whenever possible. This starting path ensures that the Assistant District Attorney is trained in criminal law and advocacy, while providing courtroom experience and exposure to the Office’s most serious and complex cases.

Thereafter, Assistant District Attorneys are assigned to one of the Office’s seven local criminal court branch offices, where most of the criminal matters in Westchester County originate. There, and under the supervision of a Bureau Chief, the Assistant District Attorney will be responsible for conducting arraignments, bail applications, preliminary hearings (on felony matters), pretrial hearings, and trials on misdemeanor offenses. Assistant District Attorneys are often rotated throughout the local court branches before being assigned to prosecute felony offenses in the Trial and Investigations Division or the Special Prosecutions Division.

Assistant District Attorneys are required to abide by a three-year commitment of service to the Office.

In light of the diversity in Westchester County, the office seeks to have a legal staff that reflects the diversity of the community that we serve. To that end, we actively recruit minority applicants. The WCDAO is firmly committed to a policy against discrimination based on race, color, religion, gender, national or ethnic origin, age, disability, marital or veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or employment status.

New York State Public Officers Law Section 3(1) requires that all persons holding civil office be citizens of the United States. Accordingly, United States citizenship is required of all Assistant District Attorneys upon commencement of their employment, as is New York State residency
